About Edgartown
map
Edgartown was founded in 1671 and is located in Dukes County on Martha's Vineyard. It was the first colonial settlement in Martha's Vineyard.

Those who visit Edgartown and are interested in historical land marks visit the Vincent House which was built in 1672 and is the oldest house on the island. It is now a museum as is the Thomas Cooke House.

Another house of interest is the Dr. Daniel Fisher House which is directly next door to the Old Whaling Church. The church has now been transformed into the Performing Arts Center. Read more information about visiting Edgartown at Senior Citizen Travel.

Farm.Field.Sea.Martha's Vineyard: Farm and Shellfish Adventure with hands-on cooking class
Venture behind the scenes with local sea and land farmers of Martha's Vineyard, then head into the kitchen for a cooking class with top Island chefs, and enjoy a farm feast created from the day's bounty. Our first stop will be Morning Glory Farm, a premier family-owned Island farm, where dirt under the fingernails and sweat on the brow mean self-sufficiency, sustainability, and unbeatably delicious homegrown food. Owners Jim and Simon Athearn will take us around the farm to learn about the heritage and history of Island farming, and how to select the best of what the soil has to offer throughout the growing season. Into the kitchen we go for a hands-on cooking class with Morning Glory Farm's head chef Robert Lionette. We will learn how to create the farmstand's signature dishes and share with our new friends, a feast created from the day's bounty. Post lunch, we will head out (via boat) to visit Nic Turner's Honeysuckle Oyster Farm on Katama Bay. Onshore, we will meet leading aquaculture experts from the Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group and learn about the shellfish and fish native to the Islandand, of course, we will sample oysters and learn to shuck like Islanders do. The adventure includes a visit (by boat) to an oyster farm, an in-depth tour of a working family farm, a hands-on cooking class, and breakfast and lunch. 9am-3pm $250 pp. Photo by Kristen Conklin

Farm.Field. Sea. Spring Bounty - Forage. Cook. Eat.
Join us to celebrate spring! This adventure is for people who are interested in the real deal of "eating seasonally." Learn about the wild edibles in the woods and on the shores of the Vineyard, the bounty of local gardens, and how the foraged spring foods bring a new dimension to your farm-fresh cooking. We will begin at Mass Audubon's Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Our guide will be Suzan Bellincampi, director of FNWS and author of "Martha's Vineyard: A Field Guide to Island Nature." Our tour will give us an immersive introduction to wild foods from the woods and shores, with a focus on arming you with the skills to identify wild edibles on your own. Learn about the ethics of foragingavoiding harvesting rare or endangered species, and making sure to take only what you need, so that wild plants may continue to reproduce. Our special guest will be Kristina Hook-Leslie, an elder in the Wampanoag tribe who grew up learning about foraging and preparing native food from her mother and grandmother in Aquinnah. A natural storyteller, she will share her experiences growing up on the island and how they subsisted on the land around them. Our adventure continues as we head into the kitchen with private chef and cookbook author Cathy Walthers, for a class on how to use and prepare locally grown spring foods, foraged greens, and other goodies. We will then gather together to get to know our new friends, over a lovely feast of the local bounty we have crafted into beautiful, vibrant dishes. It is important to note that Felix Neck is a teaching lab therefore we will not forage or fish while the class is in session. But don't worry! We will sample many foraged 'goodies' along the way and you will be armed with enough knowledge to be able to find edibles on your next walk in the woods or by beach on your own! The adventure includes foraging, storytelling, a hands-on cooking class, and breakfast and lunch. 9am-3pm $250pp Photo by Kristen Conklin
